NFL Flex Schedule 2026: The Rules, and What Has Moved

NFL Flex Schedule 2026: The Rules, and What Has Moved

You planned the Sunday around a 1:00 kickoff. Twelve days out, the league moved the game to 8:20 at night, and you found out from a group chat.

That is flex scheduling. It starts in Week 5, it gets more aggressive in December, and it reaches Monday and Thursday nights too. Here is what can move, how much warning you get, and what has moved so far.

Where things stand (last checked October 1, 2026): no game has been moved into or out of a primetime slot yet. Week 5, on October 11, is the first week it can happen. Eight games in Weeks 16 and 17 and all of Week 18 still have no confirmed day or time.

If you would rather not check: add your team to Google Calendar or to your iPhone. When the league moves a game, the event in your calendar moves. One team is free for 14 days, no card. Season Pass is $47 a year and covers every team you follow.

The 2026 flex rules, in one table

Window Weeks it can be flexed How often Minimum notice
Sunday night (NBC) Weeks 5 to 10 Up to twice 12 days
Sunday night (NBC) Weeks 11 to 13 Any week 12 days
Sunday night (NBC) Weeks 14 to 17 Any week 6 days
Monday night (ESPN, ABC) Weeks 12 to 17 Any week 12 days
Thursday night (Prime Video) Weeks 13 to 17 Up to twice 21 days
Week 18 Every game Nothing is assigned Set after Week 17 ends

Those are the NFL's own published procedures for 2026.

The number to remember is six. From Week 14 on, the league can move a Sunday game to Sunday night with six days' notice. That is the Monday of game week.

What those weeks are on the calendar

  • Week 5: Sunday, October 11. Sunday night flexing opens.
  • Week 11: Sunday, November 22. Any Sunday night game can be swapped from here.
  • Week 12: Thanksgiving week. Monday night flexing opens.
  • Week 13: Sunday, December 6. Thursday night flexing opens.
  • Week 14: Sunday, December 13. Sunday night notice drops to six days.
  • Week 18: Saturday, January 9 and Sunday, January 10, 2027.

What has moved so far

Nothing in primetime, as of October 1, 2026. The flex window had not opened yet.

For a sense of what a flex looks like: in December 2025 the league pulled Bengals at Dolphins out of Sunday Night Football in Week 16 and put Patriots at Ravens in its place. Bengals at Dolphins went to 1:00 PM ET on CBS. The announcement came on Monday, December 8, for a game on December 21. Thirteen days' warning, for a game people had on their calendars since May.

Games that still have no day or time

These were published in May with the date left open. If your team is in one of them, do not book anything yet.

Week 16: two games move to Saturday, December 26

Two of these four will be played on Saturday at 4:30 PM ET and 8:00 PM ET on NFL Network. The other two stay on Sunday, December 27. The league says it will decide no later than right after Week 14.

  • Buccaneers at Falcons
  • Bengals at Colts
  • Commanders at Vikings
  • Panthers at Steelers

Week 17: two games move to Saturday, January 2

Two of these four will be played on Saturday: one at 4:30 PM ET on NBC, one at 8:00 PM ET on Peacock only. The league says it will decide no later than right after Week 15.

  • Commanders at Jaguars
  • Chiefs at Chargers
  • Broncos at Patriots
  • Rams at Buccaneers

Week 18: all 16 games

Three games will be played on Saturday, January 9: one at 1:00 PM ET on Netflix, then 4:30 PM and 8:00 PM ET on ESPN and ABC. The rest are on Sunday, January 10, at 1:00 PM, 4:25 PM or 8:20 PM ET. Nobody knows which game goes where until Week 17 is over.

Why a schedule you saved in May goes wrong

A screenshot, a printed PDF or a file you downloaded is a copy of the schedule on the day you saved it. The league does not update your copy.

A subscribed calendar is different. It is a link your calendar app checks again and again. When the NFL moves a game, the same event shows the new day and time the next time your app checks. We wrote more about that in why flex scheduling breaks a static calendar.

One honest limit: your calendar app decides how often it checks. On an iPhone and in Outlook a change usually shows up within hours. Google Calendar can take up to a day.

How to make flexes land on their own

  1. Open your team's page: Cowboys, Chiefs, Packers, Eagles, Bills, or find yours on the NFL page.
  2. Tap Try [your team] free for 14 days.
  3. Type your email and pick Apple, Google or Outlook. The email is where your backup link goes. No card.
  4. Tap the add button. That is the last time you touch it.
