How Many Games in an MLS Season?
An MLS team plays 34 games in the regular season — 17 at home, 17 away. For comparison, an NFL team plays 17, and an NBA team plays 82. That's the whole answer. Everything below is the part people actually get wrong: what those numbers leave out, and why they're so different from each other.
💡 Quick answer: MLS 34 · NFL 17 · NBA 82 regular-season games per team. Playoffs, cups and tournaments sit on top of those numbers, so a club's real fixture count is always higher.
The short version, in a table
| League | Teams | Regular-season games per team | Games league-wide | Playoff field |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MLS | 30 | 34 | 510 | 18 teams |
| NFL | 32 | 17 (over 18 weeks) | 272 | 14 teams |
| NBA | 30 | 82 | 1,230 | 16 (20 counting the play-in) |
| NHL | 32 | 82 | 1,312 | 16 teams |
| MLB | 30 | 162 | 2,430 | 12 teams |
Those league-wide totals are just arithmetic: teams × games ÷ 2. They're useful mostly for understanding why some sports feel like an event and others feel like weather.
MLS: 34 games, and how they're divided up
The 2026 MLS regular season runs from February 21 to Decision Day on November 7, and every one of the 30 clubs plays 34 matches. The split is deliberate:
- 28 games inside your own conference. There are 15 teams per conference, so you play your 14 conference rivals home and away.
- 6 games against the other conference. Six different opponents, not twelve — you don't see most of the other side of the country in a given year.
- 17 home, 17 away. The one clean number in the whole thing.
2026 also has a hole in the middle of it. League play pauses from May 25 to July 16 for the World Cup, then restarts with a run of marquee fixtures. If you were wondering why your team's schedule looks lopsided this year, that's why.
Then the playoffs
Eighteen of the 30 clubs make the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs — the top nine in each conference. The 8 and 9 seeds meet in a single Wild Card game on November 18. The 16 survivors go into a best-of-three Round One series between November 20 and December 2, which is unusual in North American soccer and the reason MLS postseasons stretch on. After that it's single-elimination: conference semifinal, conference final, MLS Cup.
So the maximum a club can play in league competition is roughly 40 or 41 matches — 34 plus six or seven playoff games depending on whether they came through the wild card.
And then the cups, which nobody counts
This is where the "34 games" answer starts to mislead. MLS clubs also play:
- Leagues Cup — the cross-border tournament with LIGA MX, running August 4 to September 6 in 2026 with 18 MLS clubs and all 18 LIGA MX clubs.
- U.S. Open Cup for American clubs, or the Canadian Championship for Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver.
- Concacaf Champions Cup, for the clubs that qualified.
A club doing well in three competitions at once can clear 45 competitive matches in a year. That is the real reason a season feels unmanageable to follow: the league schedule is published months in advance, and the cup fixtures land in the gaps, late, one round at a time. Subscribing to the full MLS schedule as a calendar feed is the only version of this that stays correct on its own — new rounds appear when they're confirmed instead of you going and looking them up.
One more thing: 34 is about to stop being the answer
In November 2025 the MLS Board of Governors voted to move the league to a summer-to-spring calendar. 2026 is the last full spring-to-autumn season. Early 2027 gets an abbreviated 14-match "sprint" season from February to May, and the 2027-28 season proper starts in mid-to-late July 2027 and finishes with MLS Cup in late May 2028, with a winter break from mid-December through early February.
Which means if you're reading this in 2028 and your team has played 14 games and the season is over, nothing is broken.
NFL: 17 games, and the bye that makes it 18 weeks
The NFL moved from 16 games to 17 in 2021, the first change to the length of its season since 1978. Each team also gets one bye, so 17 games are spread across an 18-week calendar. League-wide that's 272 regular-season games — fewer than a single month of the NBA.
The 2026 regular season runs from September 9, 2026 to January 10, 2027. Fourteen teams make the playoffs, seven per conference, and there are 13 playoff games total. The longest possible season for a team is 21 games: 17 regular season, then wild card, divisional, conference championship and Super Bowl LXI on February 14, 2027. Teams also play three preseason games, cut from four when the 17th regular-season game was added.
The reason 17 is an odd number, and the reason your team gets nine home games one year and eight the next, is the scheduling formula — six division games, two rotating four-game blocks, two same-place matchups and one extra interconference game. We pulled that apart properly in how the NFL schedule actually works, including flex scheduling and why the schedule drops in May.
NBA: 82 games, plus a tournament that hides inside them
An NBA team plays 82 regular-season games — 41 home, 41 away — a number that's been fixed since the 1967-68 season. Thirty teams, 1,230 games, roughly late October to mid-April.
The NBA Cup confuses this, and it's worth being precise about it. The group-stage and quarterfinal games count toward the 82; the league builds an 80-game schedule and lets the first two tournament rounds fill games 81 and 82. Only the championship game is extra. So the two teams that reach the Cup final play 83 games, and everyone else plays 82.
After that: a play-in tournament for seeds 7 through 10 in each conference, then four best-of-seven rounds. A team that goes the distance in seven-game series every round plays 28 playoff games, for a theoretical maximum of 110.
Eighty-two games is why NBA fans are the ones most likely to lose track of tip-off times. There's a game most nights, the start times move around for national TV, and no human is holding four months of that in their head. If that's you, the NBA schedule in Google Calendar or the NBA schedule in Apple Calendar is the low-effort fix — pick your teams once and the games show up.
Why the numbers are so far apart
It isn't arbitrary. Three things set the number:
How hard the sport is on a body. American football is violent enough that 17 games is already a fight between the league and the players' union. Basketball and hockey can be played every other night. Baseball can be played almost daily.
How much of the revenue is gate versus broadcast. Leagues that fill 18,000 seats 41 times a year need those 41 dates. The NFL sells scarcity instead — every game is an event partly because there are only 17 of them.
What else is on the calendar. MLS sits inside the international football calendar, so its 34 league dates have to coexist with World Cup breaks, national-team windows, Leagues Cup, Open Cup and continental football. That's exactly why it's the league where "how many games" has the least satisfying answer.
How many games is my team actually playing, though
The honest answer to the real question underneath all of this is: look it up per team, because playoffs and cups make the total a moving target. Every league page on SportsCal shows the live fixture list rather than a number:
- MLS schedule — all 30 clubs, including Inter Miami, LAFC, Seattle Sounders and Atlanta United
- NFL schedule — all 32 teams, from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Detroit Lions
- NBA schedule — including the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks
- NHL and MLB if you want the 82 and the 162 in front of you
- Or start from every league we cover and every team
And if you'd rather not check: subscribing puts the count on autopilot. MLS in Google Calendar, MLS in Apple Calendar, MLS as a plain iCal feed, or the same for the NFL in Apple Calendar. Every fixture that gets added later — playoff rounds, cup draws — arrives on its own.
FAQ

How many games are in an MLS season including playoffs?
Between 34 and 41. Only 18 of 30 clubs make the playoffs, and the postseason is at most seven games — a wild card match, a best-of-three Round One series, a conference semifinal, a conference final and MLS Cup.
How many games in an NFL season?
17 per team, played over 18 weeks with one bye. 272 games league-wide. The NFL went from 16 to 17 games in 2021.
How many games in an NBA season?
82 per team, 41 home and 41 away, for 1,230 league-wide. The two teams that reach the NBA Cup final play 83, because the Cup final is the only tournament game that doesn't count toward the 82.
Why does an NFL team play 17 games but an NBA team plays 82?
Physical toll and business model. Football needs a week between games and sells scarcity; basketball can be played every other night and sells 41 home dates.
Does the World Cup break shorten the 2026 MLS season?
No — it's still 34 games. The break from May 25 to July 16, 2026 compresses the fixtures around it rather than removing any.
